DeMaere, Edith A.

Edith A. DeMaere passed away at the Claresholm General Hospital on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, at the age of 88 years, widow of Francis. She is survived by one daughter, Marian Lang of Claresholm; four sons, Leonard (Anita) of Victoria, B.C., Donald (Norma) of Claresholm, Norman (Judy) of Spruce Grove; and Cameron of Drumheller; two daughters-in-law, Linda of Granum and Cathy of Drumheller; 20 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; seven step-great grandchildren; her sister Margaret Brandon of Claresholm; her brother Bill (Betty) Cameron of Lethbridge; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by son-in-law Bob in 1980, daughter-in-law Pat in 1981, husband Francis in 1985, grandson Randy in 1989, son Kenneth in 1989, son-in-law Al in 2002 and brother-in-law Ralph in 2002. Edith was born Nov. 16, 1917 to Donald and Margaret Cameron and lived in ³the house on the hill² east of Granum, taking her schooling at Jumbo Valley ‹ a small country school approximately two miles from home either going by horseback or walking there. When Edith was 13 years of age she lost her mother, which meant as the oldest she took on more and more responsibility with the household chores. She always credited the neighbours for coming with staples such as bread and cakes and soon taught her to bake bread and the how-tos of keeping house. In February 1935 she married Francis DeMaere. Over the years she worked in Claresholm at the Porcupine Hills Lodge and the Willow Creek Auxiliary, and the lodge in Fort Macleod. She moved to Claresholm in 1998 where she has resided until her passing. Her courageous battle with cancer, her determination and faith in the Lord was a comfort and a great lesson for us all. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to the Willow Creek Continuing Care Centre Chaplaincy Fund or to a charity of one¹s choice. Funeral services were held at Leyden¹s Funeral Home Chapel of Remembrance 4079 First St. W. Claresholm on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Ralph Magee officiating. Interment will be held at Granum Cemetery.
