Mustangs earn split in weekend contests

Fort Macleod Mustangs split a pair of weekend Ranchland Hockey League games heading into the Christmas break.
On Friday night at Lomond the Mustangs were edged 6-4 by the Lakers.
Then on Saturday night at home the Mustangs whipped the visiting Peigan Cowboys 11-1.
The Mustangs head into a three-week Christmas break with a 12-13 record, good for first place in the league’s Smythe division.
Fort Macleod is back in action Saturday, Jan. 8 when they travel to Stand Off to take on the Kainai Chiefs at 8:30 p.m.

Josh Wiest scored three goals and set up another Friday night to lead the host Lakers to a 6-4 win in their first meeting of the season with the Mustangs.
Lomond opened a 3-2 lead in the first period and increased the margin to 5-3 after 40 minutes.
The Mustangs pulled within a goal just over a minute into the third but could not get the equalizer before Wiest scored into an empty net to make the final 6-4.
Jeremy Kenyon scored twice for the Lakers and Kevin Parenteau had the other marker.
Kevin Olson had a goal and two assists for Fort Macleod and Greg Schimanski and Justin Van Herk each had a goal and an assist.
Shae Ouellette had the other Fort Macleod goal and Brendan Bobby and Tyce Gallamore each picked up an assist.

The Mustangs failed to connect on seven powerplay opportunities, while the Lakers converted one of five manpower advantages.

The Mustangs scored three unanswered first-period goals Saturday and then cruised to an 11-1 win over the visiting Peigan Cowboys.
Tyce Gallamore, Hayden Shackel and Tyler Bilodeau led the Mustangs scoring with two goals and two assists apiece.
Justin Van Herk scored twice, Tyson Thompson and Greg Schimanski each had a goal and two assists and Greg Schimanski had a goal and an assist for Fort Macleod.
Goaltender Cody Hall picked up three assists on Fort Macleod goals and Kevin Olson and Justin Donahue each had one helper.
Weston Oemaso spoiled Hall’s shutout bid with the Cowboys only goal with 3:13 left in the game. Shawn Robertson and Byron Jackson each had an assist.
