It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gordon Keith Morrison on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at the Claresholm General Hospital at the age of 91.
Gordon is survived by his sisters Marion Kerr of Calgary and Marjorie Hart of Fort Macleod.
He will be dearly remembered and missed by nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and one great great niece. Gordon will also be missed by his numerous friends, who he has remained close with over the years.
Gordon was predeceased by his parents Lloyd and Nellie Morrison, as well as a niece Susan James and nephew Philip Hart.
Gordon was born in Claresholm on March 4, 1922. He attended school at Five Mile school and later attended high school in Claresholm. After graduation he began farming with his father east of Claresholm.
Upon the death of his father, Gordon took over the family farms and became a very successful farmer for many years. During these years he also served as secretary for the Three Mile Telephone Co. and was Past Master and a member of Cairo Masonic Lodge No. 32 for nearly 70 years. Gordon enjoyed curling, bowling and loved to attend family gatherings.
In 1988 Gordon retired from farming, held an auction sale and then rented the land. He remained in close association with the Glimsdale boys, who farmed the land, and they frequently had him ride along on the tractor and combine. He thought this was truly the real life.
Gordon’s mother passed away in 1990 and he decided to do a little travelling. Along with family members, he toured the Maritimes, England, Missouri, Arkansas as well as several summer vacations at Sandpoint and various points of interest in Alberta and B.C.
In 2004 Gordon was honoured to be the recipient of the Alberta Century Farm and Ranch Award. His grandfather emigrated from Oslo, Norway in 1903 and his original homestead remained in the family until that time.
A celebration of Gordon’s life will be held at Leyden’s Chapel of Remembrance (Claresholm) on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Eras Van Zyl officiating. Interment will follow in the Claresholm Cemetery.
