Fort Macleod Mustangs break even in weekend Ranchland games

Fort Macleod Mustangs broke even last weekend in a pair of Ranchland Hockey League games.
The visiting Nanton Palominos corralled the Mustangs 4-1 Friday.
On Saturday the Mustangs knocked off the visiting Pincher Creek Huskies by the same 4-1 score.
Fort Macleod continues to hold down third spot in the Ranchland standings, one point behind Nanton.
In other weekend action Nanton edged Lomond Lakers 6-4 and Lomond crushed the cellar-dwelling Huskies 16-6.
The Mustangs host Lomond Lakers at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1.
Nanton 4 Mustangs 1
A pair of unanswered goals Friday night broke open a tight game as the Palominos galloped out of Fort Macleod with a 4-1 win.
The teams battled through a scoreless first period before Nanton opened the scoring with a powerplay goal by Chris Berns a minute into the second frame.
Just over six minutes later Nanton increased its lead to 2-0 on a goal by Colin Macmurdo.
The Mustangs cut Nanton’s lead in half 12 minutes into the second period on a goal by Willy David. Cody Berube and Jadon Porterfield picked up assists.
The Palominos made it 3-1 mid way through the third on a powerplay goal by Steve McMasters, and clinched the win with a goal in the final minute by Tom Mikrut.
Tyler Marcotte blocked 23 shots in the Fort Macleod goal while Spencer Free made 31 saves in the Nanton goal.
Mustangs 4 Huskies 1
On Saturday night it was the Mustangs who made a late surge, scoring three unanswered goals in the third period to win 4-1.
The teams battled through a scoreless opening 20 minutes as Marcotte and Huskies goalie Joel Hasselman held the shooters at bay.
Six minutes into the second period Abe Jensen opened the scoring for the Mustangs, assisted by Zach Kotke.
Shawn Robertson’s powerplay goal with three minutes left in the second tied the game 1-1.
Three and a half minutes into the third period Berube got what proved to be the winning goal, assisted by Tyce Gallamore.
Five minutes later Mark Mills scored to make it 3-1, with Berube assisting.
Tyson Thompson closed out the scoring with 6:20 to go to make the final 4-1 in Macleod’s favour. Gallamore picked up his second assist of the game.
Marcotte made 27 saves to get the win, while Hasselman turned aside 30 shots in the Pincher Creek goal.
