F.P. Walshe Flyers were feeling anything but blue Saturday on the trip home from the Double Blue tournament at Taber.
The Flyers won silver medals at the senior high girls volleyball tournament.
“The girls had a great weekend,” Flyers coach Chris Baxter said. “I was really proud of how well they played.”
“They showed a lot of heart and grit and never gave up.”
The Flyers began the tournament in a pool that included Picture Butte Queens, Three Hills Royals, Crowsnest Pass Pandas and St. Mike’s Dragons from Pincher Creek.
The other pool was composed of Vauxhall Queens, Bassano Bears, Senator Gershaw from Bow Island, County Central Hawks from Vulcan and host St, Mary’s Storm.
In their first round-robin match on Friday the Flyers took on Crowsnest Pass Pandas, a Westwinds Volleyball League rival.
The Flyers dominated the Pandas 25-9 and 25-10 to sweep the match.
In their next match the Flyers took on St. Mike’s Dragons, another league opponent.
The Flyers faced a tougher challenge in this match but prevailed 25-19 and 25-20 to sweep their second match.
In their third round-robin match the Flyers tangled with Picture Butte Queens, another league foe.
Picture Butte edged the Flyers 27-25 in the first set to snap F.P. Walshe’s winning streak.
The Flyers rebounded from that loss to win the second set 25-16 to split the match.
In their final round-robin match Walshe dominated Three Hills, crowning the Royals 25-14 and 25-15 to sweep the match.
Their record of seven wins and one loss propelled the Flyers into a semifinal match against Bassano Bears.
Bassano provided a tough challenge but the Flyers prevailed 25-20 and 25-18 to win the match and advance to the championship on Saturday.
The Flyers knew they would have their hands full in the championship match with Vauxhall Queens, a Westwinds and 2A zone powerhouse.
Vauxhall got off to a good start, winning the first set 25-12.
The Flyers battled but the Queens completed the sweep with a 25-13 decision in the second set.
