Dr. Richard John Cunningham died on Monday, July 16, 2018, at 68 years old.
Richard was born and raised in Newfoundland and practiced medicine in many different places throughout his life.
He lived and worked in Fort Macleod since early 2015 and really loved being here. He was a great addition to the clinic and compared to the other doctors in the clinic, he certainly laughed the most.
Patients were often immediately comfortable in his presence and appreciated his warm openness and real compassion. Richard had personal understanding for those who struggled in life and many patients understood this.
Richard was loved by his family, colleagues, staff, friends and patients in Fort Macleod and will be missed greatly.
Richard will be especially missed by his wife Wendy; his son Alex; and good friend Lyle. Lyle, thank you for all the companionship you gave Richard this last three years. We know you will miss him and his many home renovations.
Other than practicing medicine, which Richard enjoyed to the very end, his great delight was really the ocean and his sailboat; although, being on his sailboat in southern Alberta proved hazardous at times. The wind was stronger than he expected.
We all wish he could have stayed with us longer and take comfort in his being at peace. His struggles are finally over. This picture is how we remember Richard and if anyone would like a copy to remember him, you can pick one up at the Fort Macleod medical clinic. At his request there will be no funeral service.
