Cecil Clifford Young was born Aug. 21, 1915 at
Fort Macleod and he passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at Fort
Macleod.
The second youngest of 11 children, he grew up in the Ardenville
district south of town and attended the one room school there.
A fisherman and a hunter with an urge to ramble, Cecil loved to
recount his life in the stories of his adventures in the Yukon, British
Columbia, and Europe while enlisted during World War Two. He joined the 93rd
Battery, and was wounded in Sicily. He convalesced in Vancouver and decided
to stay after the war, working as a mechanic for many years for Canadian
Forest Products.
Cecil was a keen speculator, buying and selling many properties and
automobiles, always trading wisely, and up.
Cecil returned to his home town in 1976, rekindling his friendship
with long-time friend Gwen Chambers. They married in 1980. Over the years
they travelled to many countries together, enjoying the wealth of culture
and adding to the many stories Cec loved to tell.
In 1985 he and Gwen bought a house in Lake Havasu City, Arizona,
and they spent 10 winters there.
Cecil enjoyed golf, bridge, tinkering in his shop, keeping the
house and yard in good repair, and swimming in the pool he maintained in
their back yard.
He had a wonderful sense of humour, and loved a good joke. Cec was
an extraordinary and giving human being with a polite, witty disposition. He
loved children despite never having had any of his own.
For the last three years Cec resided in Extendicare where he became
a part of their family too, his gentle heart endearing everyone to him.
Cecil was predeceased by his parents; his wife Ella; his three sisters and
seven brothers.
He will be sadly missed by his wife Gwen; her four children, Chris,
Mark, Monty and Maureen; and his eight grandchildren.
Friends who wish may donate to the Fort Macleod Handibus Society,
Box 881, Fort Macleod, T0L 0Z0.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Gwen Young and family would like to extend their gratitude to
everyone at Extendicare who helped make Cecil Young’s life as comfortable
and bearable as it could be made. The kindness and good humour of all the
staff there allowed Cecil to interact with them and made him feel he was
with friends. And he was. Thank you so much for everything.
