Dorothy Marion Burke, beloved
wife of the late Robert Emmett Burke, passed away at Fort Macleod
Extendicare on Sunday, May 10, 2009, at the age of 85 years.
Dorothy was born March 30, 1924 in Fort Macleod, the youngest
daughter of Harriett and Leonard Gilboe.
Growing up, Dorothy loved to skate and dance and it was at the
skating rink that she met Robert Burke, the love of her life. They were
happily married for 62 years until Robert passed away in March 2005.
During this time they raised their three children and made their home in
Fort Macleod. Besides raising the children, Dorothy later worked at the
Sears Order Office and for the Fort Macleod post office.
Dorothy was very active in the Fort Macleod community throughout
her life. She was a charter member of the Royal Purple and remained a
member for more than 55 years. She was also a life-long member of the
Altar Guild at Christ Church Anglican and a member of the Ladies
Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion. |

Dorothy had many varied interests, including
playing cards, bowling, volunteer work, gardening and knitting. She had an
incredible talent for cooking and baking. She was also very interested in
her grandchildren’s lives and activities. Everyone who knew Dot appreciated
her dry wit and sense of humour.
The friends Dorothy made throughout her life, especially the
“coffee ladies,” meant so much to her.
The family wishes to thank all the staff at Fort Macleod
Extendicare for their attentive and special care.
Also thank you to a special niece and nephew, Donna and Terry
Daniel, for their kindness to mom.
Dorothy is survived by her children Karen (Robert) Dawson of
Edmonton, Robert (Susan) Burke of Victoria B.C., Patrick (Colleen) Burke of
Olds; her grandchildren Camille and Courtney Dawson of Edmonton, Michael and
Dan Burke of Calgary and Sean Burke of Olds.
Dorothy is also survived by her sister Lil (Tom) Gilbert of Port
Stanley, Ont., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her loving husband Robert, Dorothy was predeceased by her
parents Harriett and Leonard Gilboe, one brother Arthur, and sisters
Florence, Gertrude, and Ev.
A funeral service was held at Christ Church Anglican, Fort Macleod,
on Friday, May 15, 2009, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Noel Wygiera officiating.
Interment to follow at Union Cemetery.
