Former Alberta Solicitor General Harvey Cenaiko gets a round of applause from former Livingstone-Macleod MLA Dave Coutts following the announcement the police college will be built in Fort Macleod.
Fort Macleod will be home to police college

Fort Macleod will be the home of the new Alberta Police and Peace Officers Training Centre.

The provincial government in 2006 selected Fort Macleod as the site of the $200-million police college, where about 1,500 recruits will be trained each year.

“The police college coming to Fort Macleod is the biggest news story in these parts since Jerry Potts led Col. Macleod and the North West Mounted Police here in 1874,” Fort Macleod Chamber of Commerce president Emily McTighe said.

The police college, which will be built in the southeast corner of Fort Macleod, will create 75 to 100permanent full-time jobs.

The college will provide standard training each year for 1,400 police officers as well as Fish and Wildlife officers, correctional facility staff and other peace officers.

The college will also be used by police services around the world for professional development.

At present government officials are developing curriculum in consultation with police forces.

The provincial government at present is working to develop a funding model, after which construction of the college will start.
