Johnny Korthuis and other riders are head over heels about Fort Macleod’s new bike park.
Fort Macleod builds new bike park

Young people in Fort Macleod and the surrounding district are head-over-heels about one of the town’s newest recreation facilities. Last fall the Town of Fort Macleod officially opened its new bike park, which was three years in the making.

“This is one of the most unique facilities anywhere,” Fort Macleod Mayor Shawn Patience said. “It’s for kids of all ages and skill levels from beginner right up to expert.”

The park, which will continue to develop, includes two wall rides, tables, kicks, ridges and drops. Riders can choose from a variety of routes, each with its own degree of difficulty. The park is available for recreational use and competitions.

The project was led by the town’s young people, after Fort Macleod officials offered to help build a bike park.

“We said to them, ‘If you’re willing to put effort into this we can build a place where you can ride and enjoy yourselves and make it your own’,” Patience said.

The town provided a five-acre site for the bike park and added about $40,000 worth of equipment and labour support to the project, which also got a $25,000 Community Initiatives Project grant and a $27,000 donation from the Sunshine Kids Day Care Society. The bike park is on the west end of Fort Macleod on First Avenue, near West Winds Stadium.
