Ranch rodeo will get a little bit western

Visitors who desire a taste of the western lifestyle will find it on Saturday, June 27 at the Fort Macleod Agricultural Society’s Ranch Rodeo. Traditional western know-how will get put to good use beginning at 4 p.m. during the eighth annual Monty Wesley Memorial Ranch Rodeo, which pits contestants in events that reflect actual work on the area’s ranches. The event is designed to show what working life is like on a ranch. The events are designed to reflect the work that was done on ranches in the 1800s, that is still being done the same way today.

Fort Macleod and district residents form teams of four people to compete in six events that have their roots in work done on the farms and ranches of southern Alberta.

Teams compete in team sorting, horse catch, calf branding, bull gathering, team doctoring and cow milking to earn points, with the top team awarded embroidered vests and a cash prize.

The intimate surroundings of the Fort Macleod Midnight Stadium and Agriplex provide visitors with the chance to get close to capture the action in photographs.

Visitors are able to get up close to the action to enjoy a true taste of western tradition.

The team that earns the most points is named champion. A halter and an embroidered vest is awarded to the rider whose mount is judged the best ranch horse.

Team sorting is one of the events in the Fort Macleod Ranch Rodeo.
