The
Fort Quilters will showcase the craft of quilting Saturday and
Sunday, Aug. 8-9 during the 11th annual Quilt Show and Heritage
Festival at The Fort — Museum of the North West Mounted Police.
Quilts created by members of the Fort Macleod guild and other
quilters will be displayed on the walls of the museum during the
show.
“Quilts are meant to be used,” Fort Quilters president Dee Coma
said of displaying these works of art outside on the wooden walls
of a museum dedicated to the history of the North West Mounted
Police. “We sit on them, we sleep on them.”
Last year the Fort Quilters broke their tradition with a display of
quilts by the 53 members of the guild — which has a strong
reputation for its hand-made quilts.
This year the guild returns to its usual format with an open
invitation to quilters to display their work.
“In the last few years we’ve had about 160 quilts and I think we
should get that again this year,” Coma said.
One of the highlights of the quilt show is the raffle of a
hand-made quilt prepared by the Fort Quilters. This year the guild
selected a “Lions and Lace” pattern, with each member preparing a
part.
“You have to kind of look for the lions and the lace,” Coma said.
The “Lions and Lace” quilt will be on display June 20-21 at the
antique sale and then at the library.
The show will feature quilting demonstrations and the sale of
pictures, frames and jewellery. |
