Fort Macleod triathlon offers challenges for everyone

Like the people who participate in the event, organizers of the Fort Macleod Triathlon are always up for a challenge.

Now in its seventh year, the triathlon offers competition in four categories on Saturday, Aug. 15 at the Fort Macleod and District Sports Centre.

“It’s a great physical challenge, but it’s certainly within the range of everyone,” organizer Alan Poytress said. “With the different races we offer, with a little bit of training anybody can do it.”

In its first two years the event was a mini triathlon, with distances in the three-event sport shortened for recreational athletes. Five years ago athletes asked for an expanded course.

“Some people were looking for a little more challenge,” Poytress said.

The 2009 triathlon has Olympic, sprint, super sprint and youth (under 10 years of age) categories. One-third of the athletes last year are registered in the Olympic competition.

While accommodating the serious athlete, the triathlon has a reputation as a fun, family-oriented event.

“It’s family-friendly and people really like that,” Poytress said
