Gazette
editor wins editorial award |
For the second year in a row The Macleod
Gazette has written the best editorial in the Alberta Weekly
Newspapers Association.
Editor Frank McTighe received the 2007 Telus Editorial Award of
Excellence on Sept. 15.
“Solid editorial all around,” wrote judge Ryan Dahlman of the
Prairie Post. McTighe won the award for the editorial
“Driver’s sentence was too lenient” published in December
2006.
The editorial was critical of the sentence given a woman who
pleaded guilty to driving a school bus while drunk.
“McTighe explains the details of the case, takes a concise stand on
the drinking and driving issue, the accused punishment, and
isn’t afraid to state an opinion,” Dahlman wrote.
Dahlman said the editorial was “a great read which stirs the
reader’s emotions.”
Second place in the competition went to the Inuvik Drum, and
Bonnyville Nouvelle placed third.
The Better Newspapers Competition awards were presented during the
association’s annual convention at the River Cree Resort
near Edmonton. McTighe won the 2006 Telus award for an
editorial titled, “Museum must ask us for help.”
McTighe’s 2006 entry in the editorial-writing contest sponsored by
Telus was headlined “Museum must ask us for help” in the
Feb. 1, 2006 edition of The Macleod Gazette.
“Mr. McTighe’s thoughtful editorial hits the community journalism
editorial squarely in the head,” wrote judge Gerald Garner
Jr. of The Taos News in New Mexico.
In the editorial, McTighe detailed the financial problems facing
The Fort — Museum of the North West Mounted Police.
While supporting the decision to create a business plan for the
museum, McTighe also recommended the board reach out to the
community for help. “His well-researched and well-crafted
piece offers viable solutions to problems facing one of
Macleod’s greatest resources,” Garner wrote.
“What set this entry apart was the documentable effect the
editorial had in the community. Well done.”
The 2006 award was presented Sept. 15 during the AWNA convention at
the Radisson Hotel in Calgary. |
