Former publisher receives Silver Quill

The Macleod Gazette editor and publisher Frank McTighe accepts an award from George Brown, president of the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association. The 2008 Better Newspapers Competition awards were presented May 29 at the Red Deer Lodge.

Gazette wins four national awards

The Macleod Gazette editor and publisher Frank McTighe accepts the Bill Draayer Award from Mary Jane Harper, former publisher of the Olds Gazette and a previous recipient of the award. The award has been presented each year since 1983 to a weekly newspaper person for outstanding contribution to the progress and development of the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association.

Newspaper association honours Gazette publisher

A framed copy of the 1938 Pulitzer Prize is displayed on a wall at The Macleod Gazette. The Pulitzer Prize was awarded to 90 Alberta community newspapers, including The Macleod Gazette, and six dailies for their role in stopping legislation limiting the freedom of the press.

The Macleod Gazette lays claim to being the oldest newspaper in Alberta. The newspaper has changed owners several times in its history. In 2001 Frank and Emily McTighe bought the Gazette from Jack Murphy, who spent 33 years as an employee and later owner of The Macleod Gazette.

The Macleod Gazette was honoured by the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association as the best newspaper in its class in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. The Canadian Community Newspapers Association recognized The Macleod Gazette in 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2009 as best all-around paper in its circulation category. The Gazette has also won numerous awards for news reporting, photography, opinion writing, education writing, coverage of the arts, sports reporting and design.
