Betty Julia Stevely

Betty Julia Stevely (nee Doolan) passed away peacefully into the presence of the Lord at home on Oct. 30, 2004, at the age of 86 years.
Betty is lovingly remembered by her husband George (Red); her children, Sandra Gerrard of Granum, Audrey Vaile of Kamloops, B.C., Terry (Karen) Stevely of Yorkton, Sask., Dan (Vivian) Stevely of Hay River, NWT, Maureen (Ken) Johnson of Kamloops, B.C., and their families which include 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by her many relatives and friends.
Betty lost her mother at childbirth in London, England. She was brought to Cranbrook at the age of 10 months to be raised by her paternal grandmother, Julia Doolan and her uncle, Jim Doolan.
In 1937, she married Oiva Saatela and settled in Kimberley, B.C. After Oiva’s death in 1942, at the Cominco Mine, Betty and her daughters, Sandra and Audrey moved to Cranbrook.
Betty was predeceased by her only brother, Terry Doolan in 1943.
Following World War Two she married George (Red) Stevely on Feb. 1, 1947, and the family grew to include Terry, Dan and Maureen. Over the years, the family moved to Fort Macleod in 1951. In 1960, George and Betty and the three youngest children returned to Cranbrook to live once again.
Betty will be fondly remembered for her many interests, namely her love and devotions to her family, her panache for flower gardening, involvement in community groups, and as a business woman. In the 1960s, she owned and operated the Sew & Sew Shop on Baker Street.
The family is most especially grateful for the dedication of Dr. Tracy Parnell, each of the care providers from Cranbrook Home Support Services, and the devotion of the circle of family members and friends for the months of care and support they brought into our parents’ home.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Betty’s life was held at the Knox Presbyterian Church, 2100 Third St. S., Cranbrook, B.C., on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Ron Foubister officiating.
