Dykers, Mary

It is with sadness that the family of Mary Dykers (de Koning) announce her passing on Monday, April 5, 2004, at St. Michael‘s Palliative Care, Lethbridge at the age of 91 years.
Mary was born on the family homestead in Orton, Alta. on May 5, 1912, the eldest daughter of George and Hilda Coddington. She received her education in Orton and Parkerville. In 1939 she married Arie de Koning.
Mary is survived by her six children: Jack (Hennie) de Koning of Pearce, Mary Ann Schmidt of Vancouver, B.C., Garrett (Kung) de Koning of Thailand, Corny de Koning (Cathy Boos) of Edmonton, Nellie (Jim) Jackson of Calgary and Esther (Lauchie) Champney of Lethbridge.
She is also survived by nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Arie in 1958, her second husband Hank Dykers in April 1982 (whom she married in 1973), her grandson Michael de Koning in December 1971, her daughter-in-law Lucille de Koning in May 1997, her sister Catherine in 1976, her brother William in 1997, and by her parents.
Mary resided on the family farm at Pearce until 1967. At that time, she moved to Fort Macleod and lived in her own home until May 2002, at which time she moved to the Fort Macleod Manor.
Mary was an active member of the United Church and UCW, serving in many capacities. She was also an active member of the Welcome Mat, serving as secretary for many years.
Mary was actively involved in writing for the Historical Society. She had a keen interest in the history of Fort Macleod and area.
Mary enjoyed many hobbies, which included sewing, gardening, quilting, writing and baking. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff on 4C of the Lethbridge Regional Hospital and the staff of the Palliative Care Unit for the excellent care of their mother during her last days.
A funeral service was held at Trinity United Church, Fort Macleod on Saturday, April 10, 2004, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Aldeen McKay officiating. Interment in Union Cemetery.
