Materi, Kay

Kay Materi passed away peacefully at the Self Care Unit in Fort Macleod on March 27, 2005, at the age of 85 years.
The middle of 11 children, Katherine (Katie) was born at Revenue, Sask. on Nov. 24, 1919, to John and AnnaMarie Usselman. In 1940 she married Balzer Materi and they moved to Prelate, Sask. where they farmed for many years.
She moved to Saskatoon in 1967 where she operated a daycare in her home to the delight of all the children who knew her as “Auntie Kay.” She came to Fort Macleod in 1980 and became the owner/operator of “Kome Kleen Launderette” for a number of years. Following that, she sold her baking in Standoff right up until her stroke 18 months ago. A highlight for her was a phone call from Walter Gretzky with words of encouragement.
Kay is survived by five children, Valeria (Andy) Salonen of St. George, Ont., Mervyn (Ada) Materi of Medicine Hat, Bernadette (Dave) McNab of Fort Macleod, Dale Materi (Peggy), Annette Materi (Wade) of Saskatoon, Sask.; 11 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; her sister Fran Langen; sister-in-law Rose Usselman; brother-in-law Tom Reis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was many things to many people. Her family knew that they were always the most important people in her life. We will all remember her as a generous woman with a remarkably positive attitude, a bubbly personality and a tremendous sense of humour, always ready to lend a hand or have a song and dance. She was a person who lived out her faith life, loving people and accepting them with unconditional love. She had a “love of life” that was infectious and lived every moment like it was her last.
We will miss her hugs.
A funeral mass will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2816 Third Ave., Fort Macleod on Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at 2 p.m. with Father Maurice Joly officiating. Interment in Union Cemetery.
A visitation was held at Holy Cross Church on Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at 6:30 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m.
