Grier, Kenneth Laurance

Kenneth Laurance Grier passed away suddenly on Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at the age of 79 years.
Ken was born and raised in Fort Macleod and hailed from a long line of Griers who first came to the Fort Macleod area in 1881.
As a young man, Ken served in the Reserve of the 93rd Bty. and was later employed as a brakeman for the CPR and as a surveyor for the Department of Highways. In 1948, he went to work for the Alberta Liquor Control Board in Fort Macleod with his brother Ronnie.
In 1950 he began dating the love of his life, the lovely Margaret Molnar, and married her July 23, 1955 at Holy Cross Church in Fort Macleod. In 1961,they moved with their young family to High River, where Ken managed the High River ALCB store until his retirement after 35 years.
Ken was also an active member of the Fort Macleod Royal Canadian Legion for 59 years, and the Elks Club in Fort Macleod.
He loved his family, camping, gardening, hockey, and fishing (and peanuts), but particularly his grandchildren, who were the light of his life.
Nothing was finer than a cool drink around a campfire with brother-in-laws and best friends Frank Gostola and Hal Dour, Phil and Al Bakken, and Larkand Lynne Isbell.
Ken is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Margaret; his children, Joey (Laura) of Calgary, Marty (Joyce) of Thompson, Man., David of Calgary and Janice of High River; along with his grandchildren Cody and Katelyne. He is also survived by his brothers, Gordon (Irene) of Calgary, Patton (Betty) of California, Freddy (Valerie) of Washington State; his sisters Gwen Grier of Calgary and Sheila Neilson, Lethbridge; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Florence Grier, brothers Richard and Ronald Grier, and brother-in-law Ray Neilson.
A funeral service was held at St. Benedict’s Anglican Church, High River, on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Giovanni DiVincenzo officiating. Interment followed at Highwood Cemetery.
