Erick, Dennis Jerome

Dennis Jerome Erick, beloved husband of Elaine Erick, passed away very suddenly in Fort Macleod on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at the age of 67 years. Dennis is survived by his wife of 46 years Elaine (Lemire); daughters Suzette (Dan) Wells, Simone (Alan) Olson and Michelle (Darcy) DeSmit. He is also survived by his most precious possessions, his grandchildren: Eric Wells, Ben and Nathan Olson, Jenna and Caroline DeSmit. He also leaves to mourn many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly and in return was considered to be a “favourite uncle” by them.
Dennis was born near Torquay Sask. on Feb. 7, 1941 and was the youngest of six siblings born to Valentine and Caroline Erick.
He was predeceased by his infant daughter Mary in 1965, brother Joe and by his two sisters, Minnie Miller and Frances Emmel.
He is survived by his brother Fildy Erick and Levine (Jim) Frank. Dennis came to Alberta from Estevan, Sask. to work at Estevan Industries at the airport in Fort Macleod. He met his soul mate Elaine Lemire and they were married on April 23, 1962 in Fort Macleod. During the following 12 years Dennis and Elaine lived in Calgary, Shaunavon, Sask., Fort Macleod and Elkford, B.C.
In 1974 Dennis and Elaine made Fort Macleod their permanent home. Dennis was a sheet metal mechanic and worked in Lethbridge until 1987 when he started working at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump as head of maintenance. Dennis made life-long friends with everyone and was known to the staff as “Papa Smurf.” He retired in April 2008 and was about to enter his golden years for which he had many plans.
Dennis was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5089 and served in many capacities including Grand Knight. He enjoyed any activity that involved his family. Dennis’s true passion was going to the CWR boat club every weekend where he was surrounded by family and many friends. He loved going to the dam so much that his licence plate read “DamHappy.”
Prayers will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Fort Macleod on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Fort Macleod, on Wednesday, Aug. 13 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Benedicto Marino celebrant. Interment to follow at Union Cemetery.
