Welsch, Fred

Fred Welsch passed away peacefully on Friday, Nov. 20, 2009. He was at home with his wife of 61 years who faithfully attended to his every need. Fred was born on July 21, 1911 in Utweiler, Bavaria, Germany. He was the second child born to Nickolaus and Frieda Welsch. Encouraged by his own father’s experiences in America, Dad set out to start his life in Canada and arrived in Halifax on Aug. 24, 1929.
Working his way west, he finally settled in the Springpoint district north of Pincher Creek. He bought land in the Summerview area and lived the rest of his life on the farm he built and loved.
He married Mom, Gertrude Müller on March 9, 1948 in Germany and brought his bride to the farm. Together they raised five children: Reno (Corine), Harry (Marilyn), Lorraine (Alvin Robbins), Betty, deceased 1999, (Ron Mensaghi), and Jim (Kathy). Papa loved all of his 16 grandchildren and his three great grandchildren. He inspired them with his strength, honesty, and commitment to family.
Fred and Gertrude still maintain close ties with relatives in Germany and the next generation carries on the tradition.
Fred lived by an incredibly strong work ethic and an equally strong faith. His community knew him as a good friend and neighbour, ready to help whenever and wherever he was needed.
Prayers were held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church Pincher Creek on Tuesday Nov. 24 at 8 p.m., with funeral mass on Wednesday Nov. 25 at 2 p.m. and interment in Fairview Cemetery. Reception to follow at the Golf Course Restaurant.
