Hornberger, Joseph Fiorese

Joseph Fiorese Hornberger, beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, in Fort Macleod at the age of 96.
Joe was born in Orton, east of Fort Macleod on Jan. 7, 1914. He grew up in the Orton area and married his sweetheart, Dorothy Fay Tolley on June 8, 1940. They raised their six children on their Orton farm until 1968 when they sold their farm and moved to Fort Macleod.
As a young man Joe was actively involved in baseball and hockey. Though short in stature, Joe could outrun almost anyone. One of Joe’s favourite pastimes was attending dances in Waterton and Orton. Coming from a large family he and his brothers were known for their practical jokes. As a father, grandfather, and husband he was committed to and supported all his family’s activities. Joe loved to go camping with his family especially to Kalispell, Waterton Lakes, and Moyie Lake.
After farming for several years, he took a job with the MD of Willow Creek, looking after the land he loved until he was 69 years young. He planted thousands of trees throughout the area, many of which still stand today. During that time, in the winters he worked at the Fort Macleod arena as an ice maker.
Joe will be remembered for his coaching, umpiring, and his many years as equipment manager for the Fort Macleod Broncs. Joe had an incredible work ethic and had a great knack for repairing anything mechanical. Even after retirement, Joe kept busy helping those in the community who needed assistance. In his later years, by watching television and listening to the radio, he was able to keep abreast of world and sporting events. One of his favourite things to do was to ride his scooter around town, stopping to talk with friends, and exploring the wilderness park. Joe loved reminiscing about the old days and was a great storyteller. He was generous, kind, unselfish, had a great sense of humour and loved people. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Of 13 children, Joe was the last surviving member of the Philip and Angelina Hornberger family. Joe was predeceased by his wife Dorothy in December 2002. He is survived by his children: Kaye (Jim) Simmonds of Salt Lake City, Utah; Gail (Ben) Fyfe of Cranbrook, B.C.; Michael (Beryl) Hornberger of Lethbridge; Barry (Leslie-Anne) Hornberger of Fort Macleod; Craig (Judy) Hornberger of Calgary; Kim (Doug) Jaster of Abbotsford, B.C.; 24 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Family and friends were invited to pay their respects at the viewing from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at Eden’s Funeral Home, 2424 Fifth Ave., Fort Macleod. A graveside service was held at the Orton Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 22, 2010. A funeral service followed at 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints of Fort Macleod, 634 20th St.
