Orr, Alma Thomas

Alma Thomas Orr, beloved husband of Evelyn Yvonne Coombs, the Prince of the Prairie, the Sultan of Snooze, the Baron of Long Bottom, Blue Wings, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, Aug. 30, 2010. Alma was born in the middle of the bald-headed prairie near Fort Macleod, in Orton, Alta. on July 24, 1927. He was raised on dirt and wind, sheep and wheat, hard work and easy laughs. He was a foot racer and a coyote hunter, a smooth dancer and a wise cracker. He loved the smell of his fresh turned fields and holding his girls in his lap to whisper wonderful, silly things in their ears.
Al was a shepherd: to sheep when he was a boy, but as a man, he watched over motherless calves and badgers, hitchhikers, wanderers, the stranded, the lonely and mostly his family. He was true to all the things he held dear: his religion, his friends, his children and his lifelong sweetheart. He was the head of his family, the Patriarch in the truest sense of the word. He believed in the goodness of people, the surety of the Saviour and he lived what he believed. He showed us how to smile when there was nothing to smile about and be brave when only courage and faith will pull us through. He was generous to all, with his cash, his home, his heart. How we will miss his dry one-liners and the twinkle in his eye.
Welcoming him home are his father and mother, Ernest Richard Orr and Mary Elizabeth Hornberger; his brothers Garth, Donald and Merle. Left to carry on, grateful for all he has given us are his wife, Evelyn Yvonne; his sisters Alta (Albert) Nielson and Marilyn (Lloyd) Spencer; his brothers Wayne (Carol) Orr and Keith (Marlene) Orr; his children Randy Jo Amasio, Laurry (Jocelyn) Orr, Renae (Rick) Bullock, Cheryl (Randy) Gunderson, David (Nony) Orr, Rachelle (David) Sugden, Gregory Orr, Jennifer (Ze) Nogueira; 34 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. We look forward to celebrating his life with friends and family at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fort Macleod on Friday, Sept. 3 from 7-8 p.m. or at the church on Saturday, Sept. 4 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the service.
The funeral service will be held at the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fort Macleod on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in the Orton Cemetery.
