Wilson, Jack


John Alvin Wilson (Jack Wilson) of Fort Macleod, eldest son of Hugh and Grace Wilson, has found peace after lengthy illness and passed away Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at Chinook Regional Hospital at the age of 79.
Dad, who was born Nov. 27, 1930 and raised in Hagersville, Ont., grew up with his three brothers Bob, Hugh and Peter.
Dad worked in various jobs during and after school from setting pins in a bowling alley to working in a lumber yard. He later joined the Canadian Army and earned his wings as a paratrooper then later became a corporal and a member of the Military Police.
Stationed in Rivers, Man., Dad met Miss Lorraine Sarsfield and later they married on Sept. 27, 1952.
After serving in the armed forces he worked at a Simpson Sawmill in Kelowna, B.C., and eventually for Crestbrook Forest Industries plywood plant in Fort Macleod as the general manager.
In 1973 he changed careers and worked in the mobile home industry until 1980. He started his own business as Jack’s Handyman Service until the onset of arthritis and diabetes forced him into retirement which he later fought for many years until his passing.
Dad enjoyed many years fishing, hunting and camping with his family and friends. Later, he enjoyed reminiscing of these trips and memories of family gatherings with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed meeting his friends for coffee to discuss topics which ranged from hunting and fishing to local, provincial and federal politics.
Dad and Mom were married for 58 years and together they had seven children, Janet (Melvin) Jones of Fort Macleod, Hugh (Jacky) of Whitecourt, John (Gerri) of Lethbridge, Pat (Penni) of Lethbridge, Dave (Lisa) of Lethbridge, Christine of Whitecourt, and Matt (Jody Litle) of Fort Macleod.
He is survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; brothers Bob (Audrey Kyllo) Wilson of Fort Macleod and Peter (Nancy) Wilson of Hamilton, Ont.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Dad was predeceased by his son Hugh (2008), his brother Hugh (2010) and his parents Grace and Hugh.
A prayer service will take place on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010, at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, 2618 Third Ave., Fort Macleod at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will take place on Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church at 2 p.m. Father Ben Marino officiating.
In lieu of flowers donations in Jack’s name may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 210D, 12A St. N., Lethbridge, T1H 2J1, or to a charity of one’s choice.
