‘Brazen’ thief steals truck from garage

A thief stole a pickup from inside a garage early Saturday morning and drove it through this locked door.

A Fort Macleod couple is feeling violated after someone broke into their garage early Saturday morning and stole their pickup.
Someone forced their way into the garage between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. Saturday and drove a 2002 Ford Explorer through the sliding garage door.
“It’s hard to put words to it,” Maurice Major said of the feeling of violation. “How brazen can some people be?”
Major and his wife were asleep in the residence on the 700 block of 18th Street when the theft occurred.
“I heard footsteps but I didn’t pay very much attention to it,” Major said.
Major later discovered someone used a small bar to pry open the 16-foot sliding garage door to gain entry.
A metallic grey 2002 Ford Explorer and a 1991 Mercedes car were parked inside. The keys to the pickup happened to be in the Mercedes.
“Nobody knew that,” Major said. “It’s impossible for anyone to know that.”
The sliding garage door was locked electronically, so the thief started the pickup and backed it through the door, leaving tire tracks on the pavement inside the garage.
“They really must have hit the gas to drive right through it,” Major said.
The thief backed the truck out of the driveway and then headed west around the cul-de-sac. Neighbours who heard the noise saw the truck drive away.
Major awoke Saturday morning about 7 a.m. to see the battered garage door with all the glass smashed out.
The garage door stayed on it hinges but damaged the back of the Mercedes.
“The (insurance) appraiser came down Saturday,” Major said. “He said he’s never seen anything like it.”
Major later discovered someone had tried to break into the motorhome that was parked outside the garage.
Anyone with information is asked to call Fort Macleod RCMP at 403-553-4407 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
