Business in Fort Macleod – Building on a strong foundation

A strong business community is the lifeblood of any town, and Fort Macleod is no exception. We are well-served by numerous small and medium-sized companies that provide goods and services not only within the town limits, but regionally and in some cases nationally and internationally as well. Our businesses not only put Fort Macleod on the map, but also provide jobs and career opportunities, contribute to the local tax base, and are strong supporters of various community initiatives and events.

The next few years promise to be very exciting for Fort Macleod in terms of greater opportunities for members of our existing business community, as well possibilities for new businesses to establish themselves. After several years of waiting, work will begin on the Alberta Public Safety and Law Enforcement Training Centre in the summer of 2011 — a $122-million facility that is scheduled to open its doors in 2014. The Town of Fort Macleod remains committed to ensuring that local firms have the opportunity to participate in the bidding process for tenders related to the construction of the facility. Once construction is complete, there will be opportunities to provide goods and services for the centre itself, as well as serving the needs of the staff and students who will be at the facility year round.

In conjunction with the training centre, Alberta Transportation will soon begin Phase I of a highway realignment on the east side of Fort Macleod. This realignment will make considerable land available to the town for commercial and business development, and will in turn support and drive new residential development in the community. The Town of Fort Macleod is working on several area structure plans to make the best of these new opportunities, and is also carefully considering how to best support established areas such as Main Street and the downtown, as well as the industrial areas south of the railroad line. Regardless of where the development takes place in the community, Fort Macleod should be prepared to see a significant amount over the next few years.
Through all of the up-coming development and changes that we will see over the next few years, the Town of Fort Macleod Economic Development Department’s goal continues to be to work towards a strong, sustainable and diversified town economy. This means supporting and strengthening the current business community, promoting the town as both a tourism destination and a great place to do business, welcoming new entrepreneurs and businesses to the community, and ensuring that Fort Macleod is ready to take advantage of any new or unforeseen opportunities that come its way.
