Drillers strike gold at Blue and White

Oilfields Drillers won a thriller Saturday night to claim the Blue and White high school girls’s basketball tournament title.
The Drillers rallied from a 10-point deficit to drain the winning basket with 15 seconds left to steal a 67-66 win — and the tournament title — from the host F.P. Walshe Flyers.
The thrilling championship game capped a two-day, six-team tournament to kick off the 2011-’12 basketball season.
The senior Flyers are Ruby Kinsella, Jane O’Connor, Vanessa Boot, Cassie Walmsley, Dakota Kambietz, Naomi Burbank, Sydney Plourde, Kaitlin Quinlan and Amanda Hofer.
Head coach of the Flyers is Andrew Walmsley. Landon Schneider is assistant coach and Charlene Drader is manager.
The Flyers found themselves in Pool A to start the tournament along with Matthew Halton Hawks from Pincher Creek and Vauxhall Queens.
Pool B was composed of the junior varsity Flyers, Oilfields Drillers and Crowsnest Pandas.
Flyers 86 Hawks 21
The Flyers opened the tournament Friday afternoon with an 86-21 victory over Matthew Halton Hawks.
Sydney Plourde poured in 38 points in a dominating performance to lead the Flyers to the win.
Vanessa Boot scored 16 points for the Flyers and Cassie Walmsley had 11.
Ruby Kinsella scored seven for the Flyers, Naomi Burbank had five and Kaitlin Quinlan, Dakota Kambietz and Amanda Hofer each had two.
Flyers 75 Queens 30
The Flyers had another easy go of it in their second game Friday, winning 75-30 over Vauxhall Queens.
This one was never in doubt as the Flyers pulled in front 37-13 at halftime.
Sydney Plourde again led all scorers with 22 points and Kaitlin Quinlan and Amanda Hofer each had 12.
Vanessa Boot scored eight and Cassie Walmsley scored seven for the Flyers. Ruby Kinsella had six points, Jane O’Connor had four, Naomi Burbank had three and Dakota Kambietz scored two.

Drillers 67 Flyers 66
Their 2-0 record in round robin put the Flyers in the gold medal match Saturday evening against Oilfields Drillers.
The Drillers, from Black Diamond, also went undefeated in round robin, beating the junior varsity Flyers 61-33 and Crowsnest Pandas 65-13.
The Flyers jumped out to a 26-21 lead in the first quarter and widened the gap to 39-32 at halftime.
The Flyers went on a seven-point run late in the third quarter to lead 56-46, but the Drillers battled to cut the lead to 56-50 by the end of the quarter.
Oilfields managed to tie the game 59-59 with 7:15 to play, but Vanessa Boot scored a basket and added a free throw to restore the Flyers three-point lead.
The Drillers fortunes took a hit when Summer Big Smoke and Becca Turner fouled out, but still Oilfields persevered.
F.P. Walshe continued to lead and after Sydney Plourde scored a bucket with 1:12 to go, the Flyers were in front 66-62.
Three free throws pulled the Drillers to within one point with 42 seconds left, and then a clutch shot by Courtney Hughes with 15 seconds left gave Oilfields a 67-66 lead it would not relinquish.
