Flyers win 2A zone title in front of Macleod fans

The F.P. Walshe Flyers lived up to their advance billing Friday on their home court.
The No. 1-ranked Flyers won the 2A high school boys’ volleyball championship in front of a gym packed with family and friends.
The Flyers beat Picture Butte Kings 3-1 in a hard-fought match, with both teams earning a trip to the provincial tournament next weekend at La Crete.
Tournament organizers were scrambling Friday after Vauxhall vikings and Willow Creek Cobras from Claresholm pulled out of what was to be a six-team, two-day tournament.
With just four teams remaining, the tournament became a one-day event with semifinal and championship matches.
The Flyers opened the playoffs Friday afternoon against No. 4-ranked Immanuel Christian Eagles.
The host Flyers went into the playoffs with an emotional boost from a school pep rally held just before the match.
The F.P. Walshe team was impressive against the Eagles, sweeping the match 25-14, 25-14 and 25-15.
In the other semifinal the No. 2-ranked County Central Hawks from Vulcan squared off against No. 3 Picture Butte Kings.

That match proved a titanic struggle with all five sets needed to determine the winner.
Picture Butte won the first set 25-16, but County Central rallied to win the second set 25-17.
The Kings claimed the third set 25-15, but the Hawks staved off elimination with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.
The tiebreaker was a battle, with extra points needed before Picture Butte clinched a berth in the championship with a 19-17 win.
The F.P. Walshe school gym was rocking Friday night as the host Flyers and Picture Butte Kings met for the championship.
The Flyers took a quick lead with a 25-20 decision in the first set.
The second set was a see-saw battle with the two teams trading points throughout. The biggest lead was two points.
Tied at 24-24, the Flyers scored the next two points to win 26-24 and take a stranglehold on the finals.
If anyone thought the Kings would concede the crown, they were badly mistaken.
The Flyers appeared on their way to a sweep of the championship match as they took a 14-10 lead in the third set.
The Kings staged an impressive rally, scoring eight consecutive points to go in front 18-14.
Then it was the Flyers turn to show some resiliency. Painstakingly, the Flyers chipped away at the Kings lead and finally tied the set 24-24.
After some exciting rallies, Picture Butte emerged from the third set with a 27-25 victory.
The Flyers didn’t let that setback derail them, and in the fourth set they opened an 11-6 lead on their way to a decisive 25-15 win and the zone championship.
