Gazette wins provincial, national awards

The Macleod Gazette for the fifth year in a row has been judged the best newspaper of its size in Alberta.
The Gazette swept all four general excellence awards in the Better Newspapers Competition.
The awards were presented May 7 at the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association’s convention at the Varscona Hotel in Edmonton.
The Gazette placed first for Best All Round newspaper in Class B for newspapers that circulate 1,200 to 1,999 copies.
Judges awarded the Gazette 887.3 out of a possible 1,000 points.
Second place went to High Prairie South Peace News with 813.4 points, followed by Claresholm Local Press with 785.8.
The Gazette also won the first-place award for Best Editorial Page, followed by Claresholm Local Press and High Prairie South Peace News.
In the competition for Best Front Page, the Gazette was first, followed by Deh Cho Drum and High Prairie South Peace News.
In judging for Best Sports Pages, the Gazette placed first, followed by High Prairie South Peace News and Claresholm Local Press.
In other award news, The Macleod Gazette brought home from Vancouver a first place award for Best Editorial Pages from the Newspapers Canada conference.
Gazette editor Frank McTighe was also awarded a second-place award for Best columnist in the national competition.
Judges awarded the Gazette a Blue Ribbon as one of the top papers in its circulation category.
Earlier this year McTighe was awarded a first-place prize by the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association for Best Education Story.
