Dorothy Irene Macaulay passed away peacefully in her home at West Highlands in Lethbridge on Monday, Jan. 31, 2011 in her 100th year.
Dorothy was born in the Galt Hospital in Lethbridge on Nov. 5, 1911 to Allan and Katherine Jack. Her mother died when Dorothy was just three years old. She and her younger sister were raised on a farm in Terrance, Man. by an aunt and uncle who loved them very much.
Dorothy attended normal school in Brandon, Man., receiving her teaching certificate in 1934. She drove her horse and buggy to teach in one room schools in rural Manitoba until her marriage to Bill Macaulay.
Bill and Dorothy farmed at Kemnay, Man. where they had five children. In 1956 the family moved to Grande Prairie and Dorothy returned to teaching once again.
In 1968 Bill, Dorothy, and their youngest son Douglas moved to Fort Macleod where Dorothy spent many years on staff at W.A. Day elementary school. During this time she went back to school herself to obtain her bachelor’s degree by attending the University of Lethbridge for evening and summer classes.
Dorothy was active in the community and after retirement she managed to travel seeing some of the many places she had read about. Mom was always kind, thoughtful and endeared herself to everyone she came in contact with. Former students were known to drop in and visit Mrs. Macaulay many years later.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Bill in 1971, her son Allan and grandson Douglas.
Dorothy will be lovingly remembered by her children Jack (Edith), Kathleen, Meredith and Douglas (Barbara); 15 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at West Highlands Good Samaritan Residence and Columbia Assisted Living for their care over the past seven years.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011, at Eden’s Funeral Home, Fort Macleod with Les Scott officiating. Interment will follow at the Union Cemetery, Fort Macleod.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society. 402, 740 Fourth Ave. S. Lethbridge, T1J 0N9.
