McGregor, Roy Norman

Roy Norman McGregor, beloved husband of Rene McGregor of Red Deer passed away peacefully at the Bethany Collegeside, on Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, at the age of 87 years.
Roy was born in Fort Macleod on Dec. 10, 1923, to James Percival and Catherine McGregor. In summers, he played drums professionally in Calgary and Waterton Lakes. In 1940, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served on a corvette from St. John’s, Newfoundland, to Londonderry, Ireland. After the war he worked for the CPR, where he lost his leg in a train accident.
In June 1950, he married Irene (Rene) Davis in Fort Macleod. They moved from Lethbridge to Red Deer in 1956, where Roy was city treasurer. Roy was an alderman from 1965-’71; mayor from 1974-’77; and alderman again from 1983’92. He was president of the Rotary Club, and received the Paul Harris Pin; president of Kinsman; treasurer for K40 Club for 10 years; received the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005; and was First Peoples Warden at St. Leonard’s On-The-Hill.
Roy is survived by his loving wife, Rene; children Rob (Brenda) McGregor of Red Deer, Kim (Vic) Halberg of Lacombe and Shelley McGregor of Calgary; three grandchildren, Brea (Paul) VanParys of Calgary, Jaye (Mike) McGregor of Grande Prairie, Justin (Shannon) VanParys of Sylvan Lake; and one great-grandchild, Presley McGregor of Calgary.
Roy will also be missed by sister-in-law Bonnie McGregor of Calgary; nephew Don (Nancy) McGregor of Calgary; and niece Trudy (Jim) Selmser of Calgary.
Roy was predeceased by his father Percy, mother Catherine, and brother Ken.

A memorial service was held at St. Leonard’s On-The-Hill, 4241 44th St., Red Deer, on Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at 11 a.m.
