Construction of the $122-million police college is to be finished Aug. 27, 2014.
That’s according to a schedule developed by the province for the Alberta Public Security and Law Enforcement Training Centre to be built in Fort Macleod.
“This is just a target schedule,” Mayor Shawn Patience said.
Patience shared the schedule Oct. 11 during the regular council meeting.
Council was told the province issued a request for qualifications Sept. 28 for contractors interested in building the police college.
“Contractors are putting their credentials together for the province to look at,” Patience explained.
Contractors have until Monday, Oct. 24 to submit questions to the province, and then must file their qualifications by 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27.
The province has set Nov. 7-9 for interviews with contractors, if required.
The province will then develop a short list of three qualified contractors by Friday, Nov. 18.
That same day the province will release a request for proposals to build the police college to the companies on the short list.
The closing date for the request for proposals is Friday, Feb. 3.
The province will award the contract on Wednesday, Feb. 29.
Construction is to be finished Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014.
“Every one of these steps we take is a good step to have behind us,” Patience said.
The province will build the $122-million Alberta Public Security and Law Enforcement Training Centre at a location just off Highway 2 south.
The Town of Fort Macleod agreed to provide the 320 acres as part of its bid to become the site of the college.
The plan is to train 250 police recruits, 250 Sheriffs and Corrections officers, 250 community peace officers and 600 professional development students each year.
In addition, police and peace officers will come to Fort Macleod for professional development courses.
The college will include a residence that can house 270 students. That’s down from the capacity of 380 students in the original plans.
The facility will include classrooms, indoor and outdoor firearm ranges, a driving track, gymnasium, running track and eating facilities.
