Viens, Paul

Loving husband, great brother and friend, Paul Viens, passed away after a lengthy illness on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011.
Paul was born in Fort Macleod, along with a twin sister, Paulette, on Nov. 5, 1942, into what became a family of five girls and two boys. Paul had a wonderful sense of humour, love of life and often mentioned that it was unfair that his sister had two brothers and he only had one.
After completing high school Paul joined the Canadian Air Force and was stationed at CFB Moose Jaw, Sask. as a radar technician. Years later he went to become a journeyman electrician and while living in Calgary he met and married the love of his life Elizabeth (Liz) Hoogsteen.
They moved to Fort Macleod in 1973 to own and manage the Sunset Motel and trailer court. Then in 1976 Paul did electrical work, helped renovate, expand and co-manage the Petro Canada Service Station in Fort Macleod. After that Paul did appliance repair and sales until ill health forced him to retire.
Paul served as firefighter and ambulance driver on the Fort Macleod Fire Department from 1964 to 1966 and from 1978 to 1985. He was a captain on the Fort Macleod Fire Department from 1976 to 1985.
Paul was predeceased by his parents Laureanne and Bernard Viens; eldest sister Colette Dersch; brother-in-law Dick Webb; father- and mother-in-law Bareld and Boukje Hoogsteen; sister-in-law Margaret Dornbush; nephew Billy Hoogsteen; and nephews-in-law Henry Pasveer and Louie Costanzo.
Paul is survived by his loving wife of 38 1/2 years, Elizabeth (Liz) Viens; brother John (Donna) Viens; sisters Laureen (Glen) Chute, Paulette Webb (Cliff), Giselle (Wayne) Gergory and Denise Emrick; brothers-in-law Harvey (Roberta) Dersch and Wiebe (Ann) Hoogsteen; as well as numerous loving nieces and nephews.
At Paul’s request, no funeral service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Paul’s memory to the Fort Macleod Community Support Bed, P.O. Box 520, Fort Macleod, T0L 0Z0, where he received such loving and compassionate care until his passing.
