Fort Macleod considering need for retirement homes

The Town of Fort Macleod must act to stop the flow of senior citizens out of the community, a councillor said last week.
Coun. Susan Koots urged council to discuss in closed session land that could be designated for such housing.
“We have a major, major need for seniors’ retirement housing,” Koots said. “It could be a wonderful opportunity.”
Koots was referring to the number of long-time Fort Macleod residents who have moved to Lethbridge, Pincher Creek and other centres where retirement housing is available.
Koots said there is a definite need in Fort Macleod for housing for seniors who want to downsize their accommodations but are not ready to move into a manor or lodge.
“We are losing all of these people who are moving to Lethbridge,” Koots said.
Council had some discussion about seniors’ retirement housing last month during its annual retreat.
Koots wants council to discuss possible locations in Fort Macleod for such a development.
“Part of that would be zoning,” Town of Fort Macleod municipal manager David Connauton pointed out.
Coun. Sharan Randle pointed out construction of a seniors’ retirement complex is an opportunity for entrepreneurs.
“Maybe we should tell somebody we need one,” Randle said.
Council directed Connauton to put the subject on a future agenda for more discussion.
