Lomond Lakers lasso Mustangs in opener

Lomond Lakers scored goals less than a minute apart early in the second period Friday and never surrendered the lead in a 6-4 Ranchland Hockey League win over the host Fort Macleod Mustangs.
The Mustangs had just tied the game 2-2 with a powerplay goal 1:35 into the period before David Foord scored for the Lakers just over a minute later.
Fifty-seven seconds later Lomond’s Matt Richardson found the back of the net to give the Lakers a 4-2 lead that the Mustangs could never overcome.
The Mustangs iced a lineup that included veterans goalie Cody Hall, Justin Donahue, Brett Wormsbecker, Tyler Bilodeau, Kent Broere, Greg Schimanski, Shae Ouellette, Cole Matson, Lander Marr, Scott Stadnichuk, Colby Charteris and Jadon Porterfield.
Wearing the red, black and gold of the Mustangs for the first time in regular season play were back-up goalie Andrew Doty, Shaun Westerson, Jamie Schimanski, Taylor Koyata, Leo Lacourciere, John Prodaniuk, Jon Stewart and Dan Fuller.
The Lakers are one of the team that benefitted from the demise of the Kainai and Blackfoot teams, with Manny Yellow Fly, Cam Creighton, Mike White Quills and Ashford McMaster now wearing Lomond’s double blue.
The Lakers struck first with a powerplay goal 8:07 into the game when White Quills scored his first as a member of the Lomond team, unassisted.
That lead held up for almost five minutes until Greg Schimanski and Jamie Schimanski combined to set up Taylor Koyata for Fort Macleod’s first goal.
Lomond regained the lead just 27 seconds later when Cam Hurt popped an unassisted marker and the Lakers went into the dressing room with a 2-1 lead.
With Lomond’s Richardson off for slashing, the Mustangs scored on the powerplay to tie the game 2-2 just 1:35 into the second period. Bilodeau scored, assisted by Broere.
A minute and seven seconds later Lomond took the lead again when Hurt and Maverick Blair combined to set up Foord.
Then Lomond made it 4-2 on Richardson’s goal, with McMaster and Creighton assisting.
The Mustangs got one back mid way through the second period when Fuller scored, assisted by Lacourciere.
With 4 ½ minutes left in the second period Lomond made it 5-3 on a goal by Josh Wiest, assisted by Zac Hendricks.
The Mustangs pulled to within a goal just three minutes into the third period. Bilodeau and Prodaniuk set up Lacourciere for his first goal of the season.
The teams were scoreless through the rest of the third period until white Quills potted his second with three seconds left to play. McMaster and Kyle Sargeant drew the assists.
Hall stopped 23 shots in the Fort Macleod net while Lomond counterpart Michael-Lee Teslak made just 13 saves.
In the only other Ranchland game Friday the Nanton Palominos spoiled the regular season debut of the league’s newest team, the Pincher Creek Huskies.
Led by Chris Maloney’s two goals and two assists Nanton handled Pincher Creek 10-6.
Curtis Billsten scored twice for Nanton and Steve McMasters, Jordie Waters, Jeremy Chadsey, Brady Hoetmer and Jeff Sapergia had singles.
The Mustangs travel to Nanton on Friday, Nov. 2 to take on the Palominos.
On Saturday, Nov. 3 at 8:30 p.m. the Mustangs host Pincher Creek Huskies.
