Macleod Curling Club hosts Cool Shots event

Curlers in southwestern Alberta have a chance Saturday, March 10 to win a trip to the women’s world championships.
Fort Macleod Curling Club will host one of three Cool Shots regional playdowns leading up to the World Women’s Curling Championship on March 17-25 at Lethbridge Enmax Centre.
Teams of two will compete in the Cool Shots game — a small-scale version of curling played on shuffleboard-style tables.
Winners in each event will be awarded a $350 cash prize for first, $100 for second and $50 for third place.
The winners also receive a pair of opening weekend ticket packages to world women’s championship and a chance to compete in the Cool Shots finals.
First place at the Cool Shots finals nets the winners a $1,000 cash prize as well as $5,000 for their home club.
The Cool Shots playdowns at Fort Macleod Curling Club are open to curlers from Fort Macleod, Claresholm, Pincher Creek, Picture Butte or Nobleford.
“Our date of March 10 is when our ladies’ bonspiel is on so we’re hoping that will attract a number of our own curlers then,” said Judy Walde of the Fort Macleod Curling Club.
The Lethbridge club hosted its Cool Shots playdowns Feb. 4 in conjunction with its men’s bonspiel and Taber Curling Club hosted its playdowns Feb. 5.
The Lethbridge Curling Club hosted members from the Coaldale Granite, Magrath and Warner clubs. Taber welcomed curlers from Milk River, Vauxhall and Vulcan.
For every 15 two-man teams registered the host club receives a pair of opening weekend ticket packages to the world women’s championships.
Three teams from each of the playdowns at Lethbridge, Taber and Fort Macleod will play off in Lethbridge on the opening weekend of the world women’s championships.
The Fort Macleod Curling Club will likely raffle off as a fund-raiser the ticket packages it receives for hosting one of the playdowns.
The club keeps the Cool Shots table valued at $1,800 made by a man in Manitoba.
“The table is a nice addition to our club,” Walde said.
