Nielson, Gwen

It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of the most amazing wife, mother and grandmother, Norma (Gwen) Nielson. Gwen passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at the age of 67 after a courageous battle with cancer and kidney disease.
Gwen is survived by her husband of 45 years Garry; daughter Jill (James) Coast; son Kyle (Amber) Nielson; her precious grandchildren Karli and Nathan Coast and Chase and Ryder Nielson; sister-in-law Geri Harbottle; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Margo and Russell McLean and their children.
Gwen was born in Yorkton, Sask. on Nov. 7, 1945 to Edward and Isabel Harbottle. She spent her childhood in Yorkton and later moved to Saskatoon to attend business school. This is where she met Garry and married in 1967.
They spent most of their first years of marriage on the family farm in Craik, Sask. where Mom enjoyed curling, gardening, coffee time with the ladies and looking after her young family.
In 1981 the family moved to Fort Macleod. Once settled, she began working at the Fort Macleod Auction Market and later became the friendly face of Scougall Motors for 23 years before her retirement.
Mom spent countless hours during the winter at the ice arena supporting her family and volunteering for Minor Hockey and the local figure skating club. In the spring, she enjoyed watching Kyle’s baseball games and coaching Jill’s slowpitch teams.
The thrill of Mom’s life was the arrival of her four precious grandchildren. Mom treasured the times when the grandchildren were at her side, spoiling the kids with special treats, hugs and kisses and love.
Mom truly enjoyed her retirement years. She loved to putter around the house and yard. She enjoyed baking and watching baseball on TV. Mom loved spending time with the “bridge ladies” playing cards and sharing laughs. Mom and Dad enjoyed several trips to Arizona and spending time cheering on their horses at the racetrack.
Mom had a remarkable spirit. Even in the toughest times she viewed the glass as half full and always faced challenges with unstoppable determination and a smile on her face. As a friend to many and the leader of our family, she will be greatly missed.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, at Trinity United Church, 220 20th St., Fort Macleod, with Rev. Eras Van Zyl officiating. Inurnment followed in Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Gwen’s memory can be made to Lethbridge Renal Clinic, 960 19th St. S., Lethbridge, T1J 1W5.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Eden’s Funeral Home, 2424 Fifth Ave., Fort Macleod,
