Mary Urness of Fort Macleod passed away on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, at the age of 100. Mary was a much loved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and will be deeply missed by her family.
Born in Nanton on Jan. 21, 1914 to Harry and Bessie Feist, Mary spent her early childhood years in Nanton, Rocky Mountain House, Caroline and Stauffer areas where her father farmed.
The family returned to Nanton where Mary graduated from high school before taking teacher’s training in Calgary. Her first job at a school in the foothills west of her parents’ home required that she teach all grade levels needed by students enrolled, tend to janitorial tasks as well as ride 12 miles a day on horseback in all kinds of weather.
Later Mary taught school in Beaverlodge before marrying the love of her life Burlin Urness in Nanton on Nov. 11, 1937.
In the early days, the couple worked at anything available and, apart from a few years in Calgary and Pincher Creek, made Fort Macleod their home for life.
Mary taught elementary school for many years. She was a faithful member of Trinity United Church, enjoyed membership in Eastern Star, delighted in gardening, entertaining friends, playing bridge, reading, solving crossword puzzles, knitting, sewing, golfing, touring the British Isles and Europe, and travelling anywhere the camper van would go. Mary cherished her family and her good friends; if help was needed, she was there.
Mary is survived by her children and their spouses Bonnie and Gary Kennedy and Danny and Murphy Urness; her grandchildren and their spouses, Jay and Charlene Kennedy, Bret and J.J. Kennedy, Jodi Urness, Bobbi Urness; and great grandchildren Duncan, Katie, Logan, Ethan, and Owen Kennedy. Mary is also survived by sisters-in-law Nita Urness, Martha Urness, Helen Urness and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was predeceased by her loving husband Burlin; brothers and sisters-in-law Harry Jr. (Buster) Feist and Tom and Anne Feist; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Johnny and Yvonne Urness, Alice and George Shenton, Marvin Urness, Clarence and Rosemarie Urness, Pearl and Arnold (Bunny) Fortier, Willard and Anne Urness, Sanford Urness, Alvin Urness, Mildred and Les Dodd and Mel Urness.
For the past five years, Mary’s home was Fort Macleod Extendicare. The family will be forever grateful for the compassionate and respectful care she received from all the Extendicare staff as well as from Dr. Robert Simpson, Dr. Anne Uwalaka and Dr. Steven Beekman.
In lieu of flowers, friends might consider donating to the charity of their choice in memory of Mary.
A memorial service is to be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 8. 2014, at Trinity United Church, 220-20th St., Fort Macleod, with Rev. Eras Van Zyl officiating.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Eden’s Funeral Home. Phone 403-553-3772 or visit
