It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great grandmother, Joyce Jacqueline Yellow Horn (nee Crow Shoe) Ii-pii-tspah-koo-mii of Fort Macleod, who passed away suddenly on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014 at the age of 68.
Joyce was born in Brocket on May 4, 1945 to Alfred and Cecile Crow Shoe and was a descendant of the Lonefighter Clan, Buffalo Chips Clan and her father was a member of the Brave Dog Society. Joyce received her Blackfoot name Ii-pii-tspah-koo-mii from her late uncle John Yellow Horn.
Joyce spent the majority of her life in Fort Macleod where she raised her family. Joyce was known to be a very compassionate, caring, generous and kind person. Although Joyce endured many struggles in her life she always seemed to have a positive outlook on life and touched the hearts of many people.
Joyce attended residential school at Sacred Heart School in Brocket.
Joyce came from large, diverse family where everyone was very unique. Joyce was the oldest of her three siblings and always looked after her younger sisters, Regina and Twinkle.
Joyce attended Nechi training, as well as school at the University of Lethbridge.
Joyce had a big heart and never hesitated when it came to helping her family or friends; she was always providing assistance in any way she could. Joyce was a very dedicated mother to her children and cherished the moments she got to spend with her grandchildren. Joyce loved to cook, bake and crochet quilts for her family. Joyce was always front and centre to capture family moments with her camera. We will miss our mom’s laugh as it was the most contagious belly laugh. Mom always spoke her mind; however, she was very kind and comical.
Left to mourn her passing are her children, Roland Yellow Horn, Stanley Yellow Horn, Roberta (Mark) Smallbones, Julien (Deidrie) Yellow Horn and Sandra (Dale) Johnson; 20 grandchildren, four great grandchildren; and her dog, Katie. She is also survived by three siblings, Regina (Lyle) Brazeau, Alvina Crow Shoe and Alan Simone.
A funeral service was held on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, in Brocket. Interment followed at Brocket Cemetery.
