Mary Lou Brown, beloved wife of George Brown, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015, at the age of 86 years.
Mary Lou was born in Fort Macleod to parents Priscilla and Leo Noel. She and her sisters Bernice, Virginia and Wilda were raised in the McBride Lake district south of Fort Macleod, on the Blue Trail. She went to school in a one room school house and then later moved to Macleod to finish high school.
Mary Lou started work at the Alberta Government Telephones office as an operator. This was the start of many fulfilling jobs she held over the years.
On Aug. 20, 1951 Mary Lou married George Brown in a union that was to last almost 64 years. They raised five boys, mostly in the same big house on Second Avenue that has been the center of our family life for decades. Mitch, George, Corey, Norman and Harley were born in a space of seven years and were a source of both pride and boyhood challenges. Many times Mary Lou was asked how she managed to raise all those boys and still retain her sanity.
Mary Lou was a hard worker and enjoyed the jobs she held over the years. She spent many years helping George with his bulk fuel business followed by a decade managing the Travel Alberta Information Center. This work brought a great deal of satisfaction and after that she had more years of helping tourists at the Fort Museum. The Sew Sew Club and the Catholic Women’s League were a welcome distraction from the day to day of raising a family and work. Retirement brought with it time to spend with her grandchildren and catching up on sports on the television.
Mary Lou is survived by her husband George; sons Mitch (Cindy), George (Lee), Norman and Harley (Cindy); grandchildren Lindsay, Tyler, McCauley, Tess, Randy and Jamie; and great grandchildren Zachary, Zoe and Eli. She was predeceased by her son Corey in 2006.
A memorial mass was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday March 3, 2015, at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2604 Third Ave., Fort Macleod, with Father Angelo D’Costa presiding.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Diabetes Association, 204-2323 32nd Ave. N.E. Calgary, T2E 6Z3 or The Heart and Stroke Foundation, P.O. Box 2211, Lethbridge, T1J 4K7.
