A need has been identified in Fort Macleod — and other communities too it seems — for temporary child care or day home space for children aged five to 12 years when school is not in session due to staff professional development days.
This in turn has meant parents have to take a day off work or leave their children home with older siblings.
There is now a professional development day camp available free of charge to help fill this need.
It is held at the Anglican Parish Hall and is run on the same hours as regular school days on 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on PD Fridays or 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on PD days held Monday to Friday).
The children bring a lunch and there is a breakfast and snack program offered as in school.
All volunteers will have a criminal check and there is a minimum of one volunteer per 12 students.
The first PD day camp took place May 15 and offered such programs as gardening, in which children planted Kohl Rabi, adding seed packets onto popsicle sticks and covering with plastic bags to preserve them in the elements. It was an educational experience from how to plant, care for and prepare.
The day camp also offered a baking program, in which children read directions, measured, printed the directions onto recipe cards, and through teamwork turned the frosting disaster into a decadent fudge tree.
The PD day camp also offered storytelling and music time with grandma and grandpa figures, singing old-fashioned songs, and reading fairy tales (one student actually recorded it on her iPod).
Children also played old-fashioned games such as croquet and bocci ball.
The next professional development day is Friday, June 5 so a PD day camp will be offered that Friday.
Parents can register their children at 403-553-3746 or fmchristchurch@gmail.com.
