Johnny Summers Little Big Band performs Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Empress Theatre.

Jazzy octet Johnny Summers Little Big Band will ring in the Christmas season at the Empress on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m.
In the spirit of Frank Sinatra, who would be celebrating his 100th birthday Dec. 12, Johnny Summers will be crooning some Christmas favourites from his new CD, as well as his signature jazz tunes.
Summers is a Calgary-based jazz singer, trumpet player, composer and arranger who performs a diverse selection of music including jazz, soul, funk, rock, blues and gospel.
He started the Calgary Jazz Orchestra in 2004, and is artistic director of the 16-piece band.
The Johnny Summers Little Big Band is a subset of the larger orchestra, consisting of trumpets, saxophones, trombone, piano, bass and drums.
As a recording artist, Summers has released four albums and has received five Global Music Awards.
The Johnny Summers Little Big Band performance at the Empress is part of a tour to celebrate the release of Summers’ newest album, Johnny Summers When It’s Christmas Time.
Summers has studied and played in Vancouver, Toronto, New York, New Orleans and beyond.
The show is part of the Centre Stage Series line-up for the 2015-’16 season.
