Kirk, Edith Gladys (Haaland, Bird)

Edith Gladys (Haaland, Bird) Kirk passed away peacefully on Friday, June 26, 2015, at Extendicare in Fort Macleod at 91 years of age.
Edith was born on Oct. 25, 1923 on the family farm north of Shaunavon, Sask. and lived in the Shaunavon and Climax areas until 1985 when she moved to Fort Macleod to be near her family.
Edith will be missed by her daughters Cheryl Jackson (Lowell) and Diana Nadeau (Raymond); grandchildren Sheldon Nadeau (Kaisa), Layne Nadeau (Jill), Andrea Jackson (Brad Larson), Alissa Jones (Chris), Gerald Nadeau, and Amy Jackson; and great grandchildren Paavo, Olavi, Adair, Greer, August and Natalie.
Edith was predeceased by her parents Lawrence and Gladys Bird; all nine of her siblings (Joseph, Harold, Wilfred, Jean and Jesse, and Alice Bird, Doris Arnal, Evelyn Broom, and Joyce Harper) and husbands Herbert Haaland and Irving Kirk.
As a young woman, Edith worked hard on the farm, subbing in as hired man as well as taking care of the household chores and garden. In the winters she and Herb worked at coal and copper mines, and lumber camps, in Alberta, B.C. and Ontario, where Edith was the camp cook, to supplement the farm income and help pay for the land.
After staying at home for several years to raise her family, Edith returned to the work world in various capacities eventually taking a hospital administration course and becoming the administrator of the Climax Hospital. Following this, she became a teller and eventually assistant branch administrator for the Royal Bank where she worked for 15 years.
After her retirement in 1985, Edith enjoyed her yard and her garden, playing cribbage with her friends at the Welcome Mat and the provincial Seniors Games, travelling with her daughters and friends, and reading. She was a member of the Fort Macleod Legion Auxiliary and was secretary and/or treasurer for the Welcome Mat Seniors Centre for many years.
The family wishes to extend a thank you to the staff of Macleod Pioneer Lodge where Edith was cared for so compassionately from 2010-’15, as well as to the staff of the Fort Macleod Community Support Beds, and Fort Macleod Extendicare where she spent her last days.
Memorial tributes may be made to the Fort Macleod Handibus Society, P.O. Box 881, Fort Macleod, T0L 0Z0.
Friends are invited to join the family at an informal social and memorial at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2015, at the Holy Cross Parish Hall, 2517 Third Ave., Fort Macleod.
