Roberts, Gerald Douglas

gerry roberts

Gerald Douglas Roberts, husband of Deirdre Coma, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, at the age of 74.
Gerry was born Aug. 2, 1940 in Edmonton to parents Anna and Edward Roberts. He was the fifth child of seven children and was raised in Edmonton.
Gerry married Sonja Johnson in 1962 and had daughter Kimberly in 1972.
Gerry worked for Alberta Government Telephones for 36 years in many different capacities, which also included a stint at the Alberta Legislature, until his retirement in 1993. While in Edmonton, he was instrumental in getting the Big Brother Program started and cherished his time as a board member for the Good Samaritan Society.
When Sonja passed away in 1992, Gerry met Deirdre, left the big city and moved to Fort Macleod in 1994. Here they ran Mackenzie House Bed and Breakfast together.
Gerry took to small-town life like a duck to water. During his 22 years in Fort Macleod, he loved his daily walks near Union Cemetery which for many years were done with his dog Major. He enjoyed talking with people he met on these daily walks. He had his beloved Model T for many years. Gerry had a love for golf, and was generous with his time mentoring several young people in this sport.
Gerry performed many acts of generosity in the community that he would rather only the recipients knew about rather than the general public. Whenever he saw a need, he filled it, especially if it involved young people. He always lent an informative ear to people who needed advice.
Gerry will be greatly missed by his wife Deirdre; daughter Kimberly (Dean); and grandchildren Luke, James, Sonja and Julia.
Gerry is also survived by four brothers, Ed, Bill, John and Jim and a sister, Joan.
Gerry was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Sonja and his brother George.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. at Christ Anglican Church in Fort Macleod on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
