Daysland North Stars blanked Nanton Palominos 3-0 Sunday to win the Senior AA hockey provincial tournament.
Fort Macleod Mustangs placed fourth in the four-team tournament at Nanton, losing Sunday to Wainwright Rustlers in the bronze medal game.
Mustangs 4 Rustlers 1
Fort Macleod opened the tournament with a 4-1 win Friday night over the Wainwright Rustlers.
The Mustangs played a near-perfect game, limiting Wainwright’s scoring chances while scoring timely goals.
Abe Jensen opened the scoring seven minutes into the game, with Tyce Gallamore and Leo Lacourciere assisting.
Just over five minutes later, with the Mustangs on the powerplay, Gallamore took a pass from Jensen and scored and Fort Macleod took a 2-0 lead into the dressing room.
Seven minutes into the second period Lacourciere scored another powerplay goal, assisted by Kent Broere and goalie Cody Hall to put the Mustangs up 3-0.
Just 41 seconds later it was 4-0 as Gallamore got his second of the night, assisted by Lacourciere. Special teams was again a factor, with the Mustangs on the powerplay.
Wainwright replied two minutes later with the only goal they would score as the Mustangs galloped to a 4-1 win.
Hall made 29 saves in the win while Fort Macleod fired 35 shots at the Wainwright goal.
In the other game Friday Daysland edged Nanton 5-4.
North Stars 4 Mustangs 2
Their win over the Rustlers advanced the Mustangs to a game Saturday against Daysland.
The North Stars scored a pair of goals just 43 seconds apart in the third period and skated to a 4-2 win over the Mustangs.
Daysland opened the scoring nine minutes into the game, but the Mustangs replied 2 1/2 minutes later with a goal by captain Cole Matson, assisted by Broere.
Daysland regained the lead four minutes later and went into the break up 2-1.
There was no scoring in the second period and Fort Macleod tied the game just over 13 minutes into the third on a goal by Lacourciere. Gallamore and Jadon Porterfield assisted.
Fifteen seconds later Daysland regained the lead, and scored again just 43 seconds after that to take a 4-2 lead they would not surrender.
Andy Sinclair made 42 saves to lead Daysland to victory while Hall made 19 saves in the Fort Macleod goal.
In the other game, Nanton doubled Wainwright 6-3.
That set up a meeting Saturday night between Fort Macleod and Nanton, with the winner advancing to the goal medal game Sunday against Wainwright.
Palominos 4 Mustangs 3
Nanton and Fort Macleod had met for the Ranchland Hockey League title, with each game in that series won by the Palominos settled by a single goal difference.
The provincial game followed the same script, with Nanton edging Fort Macleod 4-3.
The Mustangs burst quickly from the chute as Matson scored just 51 seconds after the puck was dropped, with Bryce Lamb assisting.
Nanton tied the game a minute and a half later, but less than two minutes after that the Mustangs regained the lead on a solo effort by Gallamore.
Nanton scored three minutes later and it was tied 2-2 after 20 minutes.
Three minutes into the second Lacourciere scored, assisted by Josh Campbell, and Fort Macleod led 3-2.
That lead held up for almost 10 minutes before Nanton tied it 3-3
The teams were scorelesss for the rest of the second period and all of the third, sending the game into overtime.
The teams battled through 16 minutes of extra time before Dillon Loomer won it for Nanton.
The loss sent Fort Macleod to the bronze medal game Sunday afternoon and a rematch with Wainwright.
Rustlers 7 Mustangs 3
The Rustlers picked the right time to record their only win of the tournament as they downed the Mustangs 7-3 to win the bronze medal.
Wainwright took a 2-1 lead in the first period, with Ashton Zintel scoring for Fort Macleod, assisted by Lacourciere and Campbell.
The Rustlers scored early in the second to open a two-goal lead but the Mustangs fought back, tying the game on powerplay goals by Cody Berube and Broere.
Lamb, Lacourciere, Matson and Zintell picked up assists on the Fort Macleod goals.
The third period belonged to the Rustlers as they scored four unanswered goals to win 7-3.
Hall gave up six goals on 16 shots before being replaced by Dean Skidmore, who allowed one goal on eight shots.
Fort Macleod got 20 shots on the Wainwright goal.
