Schuitema, Doris

Doris Schuitema passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 5, 2016, at the Edith Cavell Care Centre in Lethbridge at the age of 91.
Doris was born Dec. 19, 1924 in Macleod. Her family moved to the Blood Reserve near Stand Off when she was preschool age. She attended Lone Rock school in the Glenwood district and graduated from Macleod high school. She attended the Royal Alexander School of Nursing in Edmonton, graduating in 1948.
Her nursing career took her to many hospitals from Victoria, to Saskatoon to Leavenworth, Washington and then finally back to southern Alberta where she worked at the Peigan Hospital at Brocket. It was while working at Brocket and visiting her parents who lived at Pearce, that she met Dick, her future husband. They were married in August 1952.
Doris worked part-time at the municipal hospital in Fort Macleod over the years, was matron of Blunt’s Nursing Home in the early 1970s and worked part-time at the rehabilitation hospital in Lethbridge in the late ’70s.
Doris and Dick lived on their farm in the Pearce district until September 1994 when they moved to Lethbridge.
Doris was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and the Dorothy Douglas Women’s Missionary Society in Fort Macleod. She was a lifelong member of the Order of the Royal Purple. She always enjoyed visiting with friends, playing cards and visits from her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Doris is lovingly remembered by her daughter Joan Rugg (Bill), grandchildren Ian and Kevin; son Darrell and grandchildren Richard Schuitema and Cheryl Libby (Aaron), and great-grandchildren Amelia and Hazel.
Doris is also survived by her sisters Joyce Harrold and Anne Thompson as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Doris was predeceased by her parents Percy (Tobe) and Virginia McFarquhar Dillingham); infant son Gerard in 1959; teenage son Graham in 1974; and by her beloved husband Dick in 1995.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 19 at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 1818 Fifth Ave. S., Lethbridge.
A private family interment will be held at Union Cemetery in Fort Macleod.
Memorial donations may be made in Doris’s name to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), 100 – 410 Stafford Dr. S, Lethbridge, T1J 2L2.
