Alanna Lou Foote is Fort Macleod and district’s 2018 New Year’s baby.
The daughter of Patrick and Christina Foote arrived a 5:07 a.m. Jan. 3, weighing seven pounds 10 ounces and 20 inches in length.
That her child might earn this particular honour was not on Christina’s mind.
“I thought that I had probably missed it,” Christina said of the race to have the first baby born in the new year.
The birth at Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge went well and both mother and child are in good health.
The Footes have three other children: five-year-old Mikayla, three-year-old Cameron and Justin, who is 1 1/2 years of age.
The siblings — in particular Mikayla — are excited about the new addition.
“She (Mikayla) kept saying, ‘I wanted a girl and I got one’,” Christina said with a laugh.
The Fort Macleod Chamber of Commerce organized a New Year’s Baby contest, and put out a call for people to let administrator Ashley Nelson know about births early in the year.
Based on the replies, it was determined Alanna was the first child born to a family in the Fort Macleod area.
Chamber members who responded to the call for donations of gifts for the newborn and her family included Village Greenery and Gifts (baby blanket, Green Tea Cleanser hand soap, pink hair clip and a purple stuffie); Mereski Jewelers (picture frame and two baby ornaments); Homestead Bakeshop (bread and cookies); Hansen’s Family Foods ($75 gift card); Bloem Floral Designs (picture frame and My First Curl/My First Tooth trinket boxes); Fort Pharmacy (Pampers and Huggies wipes); the Santa Claus Parade Committee (scarf, toque, water bottle and bag); and The Macleod Gazette (measuring board, one-year subscription and a free birth announcement).
The Chamber also donated chocolates, balloons and a lamb stuffie.
