Gore, May Fong

may gore

May Fong Gore of Calgary, formerly of Fort Macleod, passed away peacefully at Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017, at the age of 86.
May was born in Hoi Ping, China in June 1931. She came to Calgary in 1951 and married Fay Gore. Shortly thereafter, they went to Mendham, Sask. where Fay had been residing.
In April 1952 they moved to Fort Macleod where May’s uncle owned a share in the Palace Cafe and Silver Grill Cafe (combined). When May’s uncle passed away, his share was purchased by Fay and his father, George. In 1959, the Gores purchased the Silver Grill Cafe which the family ran until 1993.
In October of that year, with most of their children scattered throughout Alberta and British Columbia, the Gores retired to Calgary. They were together for 62 wonderful years until Fay passed away in 2010. May continued to live in Calgary until her passing.
May had numerous interests, many of which were self-taught. She was an excellent seamstress, sewing many of her young daughters’ clothes as well as beautiful Chinese dresses. She could knit or crochet a pattern without actually reading the instructions. She loved to put together flower arrangements and proudly displayed them in the restaurant and at home. She enjoyed gardening, growing vegetables and flowers. She made delicious pastries (such as cookies, cupcakes and Chinese dumplings) without ever reading a recipe, and often cooked large quantities so that she could share with her family and friends. She would always send care packages home with her children.
In her later years, May enjoyed any chance to travel with her family. She especially loved visits with her children and grandchildren.
May is survived by her nine children, Amy, Bing (Gwen), Jean (Don), Fern, Ron (Jean), Leah, Lynn, Ginn and Susie; and 12 grandchildren, Cameron, Daniel, Braeden (Rajbir), Emily, Robert, Mary, Geoffrey, Michelle, Nicole, Rebecca, Kelsey and Kaitlyn. She was devoted to her family and always wanted them to be the best they could.
May will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family and friends.
Funeral services was held at Eden’s Funeral Home in Fort Macleod, 2424 Fifth Ave., on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017, at 11 a.m.
Interment followed at Union Cemetery in Fort Macleod.
