Gray, Dennis

dennis gray

It is with broken hearts and great sadness that the family of Dennis Ray Gray announce his passing on Thursday, April 12 at the age of 64 after a long and well-fought battle. His miraculous strength got him through 24 years of systemic scleroderma which affects all major organs, and is a very debilitating and painful and most often terminal disease.
Soon after being diagnosed, Dennis had to stop all his favourite things to do: curling, coaching and playing hockey, reffing and water skiing. He loved to camp and continued to do so as long as he could.
Dennis’ other talents were endless. He was a skilled concrete worker, he built furniture, fixed his own vehicles, and did his own home renovations. Dennis was a life-long resident of Fort Macleod.
Over the years as the disease progressed, anything physical became more and more painful and the use of his hands became more challenging, but that didn’t stop him. Dennis continued to work at the Fort Macleod hospital as head of maintenance. Dennis was diagnosed with lung cancer on Dec. 16, 2017. Dec. 19 was his last day of work, and his next battle began. And boy did he fight hard.
My man worked very hard at his job and everything else in his life. He was reliable, committed and truly dedicated to everything he started, and expected nothing in return.
Dennis was a remarkable example of a great husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, co-worker and friend. He is and always will be our hero.
As his wife (Cindy), Dennis was my best friend and soul mate. We would have celebrated our 46th wedding anniversary this April 28. Dennis is survived by our children Tacy Lewis and Kip, Chad Gray and Jaime, Wade Gray and Leisja; grandchildren Joel, Jordan, Peyton, Hennesey, Riley and Kaeden; his mother Luella Holt; and his mother- and father-in-law Jean and Reg O’Sullivan.
Dennis will always be loved and missed by his sisters- and brothers-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews, and by his many friends and co-workers.
Dennis is predeceased by his dad Ray Gray and both of his siblings, Larry and Donnie Gray.
A celebration of life will be held between 1-4 p.m. on Saturday May 5, 2018, at the Fort Macleod and District Community Hall, 301 25th St.
Memorial donations may be made to Scleroderma Canada, 41 King William St., Suite 206, Hamilton, Ont. L8R 1A2.
