Housing committee moves under town’s umbrella

The Fort Macleod Housing Committee has a new home.
Town council last week agreed to the group’s request to make it an official committee of council.
“This is just a further step in having a little more direction,” committee chair Angie O’Connor said.
O’Connor and Ronda Reach appeared on behalf of the committee as a delegation at the July 23 council meeting.
Town of Fort Macleod chief administrative officer Sue Keenan agreed with O’Connor’s position that becoming a committee of council is a move forward.
“I think Angie is absolutely bang-on right,” Keenan said. “There needs to be a more formal recognition of the committee.”
The Fort Macleod Housing Committee has as its goals:
• To increase capacity for action on the continuum of housing in Fort Macleod.
• To facilitate partnerships and collaborative planning towards the effective development of housing strategies in Fort Macleod through working subcommittees.
Council was told that the town formally adopting the committee will ensure more effective planning.
The housing committee will be made up of two community members at large; two town councillors; and one representative from each of the Willow Creek Foundation, Foothills Centre, Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), Alberta Health Services, Kids First Family Centre, and Fort Macleod real estate companies.
“It’s more of a coalition,” O’Connor said. “That’s how we think of it.”
O’Connor said the committee will “have more clout” by coming under the Town of Fort Macleod’s umbrella.
Keenan agreed.
“The other thing that this is going to do is that (town) administration will work more closely with the committee,” Keenan said.
